Minimalism and Maximalism: Two Far Reaches of Fashion Collide

In fashion history we either see a peak in minimalism or maximalism, but for the first time both are happening at the same time. Usually, you can tell which is dominating at a given time. For example in the ‘70s we had earth tones and simple garments worn over and over again, but in the ‘80s we had an excess of color, jewels, and glam. With trends coming and going ever so quickly somehow both have made it to the forefront. Minimalism has been an approach we’ve seen for a couple seasons with the Parisian aesthetics of less is more and with the sustainability movement well underway. Instagram influencers have created a demand for neutral tones and items that can be worn time and time again. This has re-popularized brands like Calvin Klien and has given a new light to Everlane and COS. At the same time we are dealing with an ‘80s resurgence where it’s all about extravagance—very much maximalism. The rap industry is definitely a proponent of this since most rep brands such as Gucci and Versace. Amongst women we see the spike of ruffles, frills, metallic fabrics, and embellished clothing and accessories coming out of brands such as Giambattista Valli, Miu Miu, and Alessandra Rich.

Does this mean the fashion cycle is speed up that we will never see minimalism or maximalism taking the sole lead. Or does this mean that anyone wears whatever they want now regardless of what trend is dominating the fashion industry.
