How to Make Spotify Your Bitch

As my first post on this blog I think it’s appropriate that I let everyone know I’m 100% team Spotify. Apple Music is fine for anyone who doesn’t want optimal music streaming that is curated directly for the listener. So, if you’re offended I sincerely apologize but until Apple Music is free for apple product users I’m shamelessly team Spotify.  Now, in this post you’ll find how to effectively navigate Spotify to best suit your music taste. Luckily, it’s already pretty easy considering all the features that Spotify offers.

For example, discover weekly is a feature the app offers that refreshes every Monday. This playlist is usually about 20 songs that coincide with music you’ve been listening to lately. For example, if you’ve been queuing a lot of Kendrick Lamar and searching up a lot of Drake, your discover weekly playlist will probably comprise of J Cole, Kanye and the rest of the list will include miscellaneous artists. This is cool because that’s how I’ve found a lot of underground artists that are good and cheaper to see live than popular artists like Ye or J Cole.

Also, at the end of every year Spotify creates a playlist of your most listened to songs for that year. This playlist comes out at the beginning of December and let me tell you it will give you crazy nostalgia. For myself, I listen to a lot of music in the summer on Spotify. So, when I listen to “Your Top Songs 2018” playlist I get cool flashbacks to jammin’ out on the way to the beach with my buds.

Another playlist that Spotify offers are your daily mixes. These change depending on what artists and genres you listen to most. These 5 playlists each highlight different artists of the same genre. For example, one daily mix playlist can be all edm dj’s like Yellow Claw, Tiesto and Alesso. While another playlist could be all 2000’s emo like Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. There’s a different one for whatever you feel like listening to that day. Again, these playlists are all curated to what you listen to which means it’s manipulatable. Listen to whatever you want to hear more of and boom, Spotify becomes your bitch.

Other features I should highlight are the release radar which is a playlist of newly released music that Spotify thinks you might like. The moods playlists, which are playlists for when you’re getting ready to go clubbing or playlists for when you’re sad because Chad just broke up with you. There’s dozens of them for every mood. They even have playlists of throwback jams everyone loves or songs specifically for singing the lyrics to in the car with your friends. And I promise you all these playlists are scary accurate. You can even add Facebook friends to a playlist so you guys can collab and make a soundtrack perfect for the whole squad.

Now at this point you might be thinking, damn I’m a broke boy and most of these features are geared towards Spotify premium users. They offer a deal for $5 a month for students. You get Spotify premium which allows you to skip as much as you want and play any song at any time, and you get Hulu and ShoTime too! Apple Music where is that type of loyalty at? You literally get 3 streaming services for less than the regular $7.99 per month plan, just for being a student. All you have to do is provide your school email. I promise you I haven’t been endorsed by Spotify to say any of this, I’m just trying to help my people get the most out of their streaming service.
