Flying Solo Couture NYFW

On a rainy Friday evening, I arrived at Pier 59 for the Flying Solo Couture show. The place was packed and guests were disgruntled. A fire marshal had informed the Pier 59 staff that the place was at maximum capacity, which caused everyone to complain. We were all wondering whether we were going to see the show. There were threats from Pier 59 that the show was going to be cancelled because the crowd wouldn’t leave after being told to several times to clear the area. After a few minutes some people that were previously upstairs left, which allowed a few more attendees to be rushed upstairs right before the show was about to start (including me!). When the music started (a remix of the song Milkshake) one of the models took her first steps down the runway and all the chaos from the beginning seemed to have disappeared, it was time to enjoy what we’ve all been waiting for.

Flying Solo is an independent designer platform that showcases an array of up-an-coming designers. The couture show featured designers such as Thuy Design House, Hiromi Asai, Georgina Herrera, J’amemme, Nambina Viera, Cessani, Gela Wesh, Ece Ozalp x Meltem Sahin, Asady, Nativ Tatoo, Meekelle By Michelle, Isabel Orginal, Xllullan, Aida Story of Batik, Quod Erat Demonstradum, Miranda Kurtishi, Marina Micanovic, Diana Caramaci, Fraqair and BJ Couture.

The brands featured numerous trends, which included tulle, ruffles, ballon sleeves, metallic fabrics, sheer fabric, and feathers. My favorites included the large straw hats by Go Clothed that Xllullan choose to accessorize with and the chain metal tops from Georgina Herrera. The Flying Solo show had some breathtaking looks created by truly talented designers, I can’t wait to see what comes next.
