Tulle is Having a Moment

I always say that in another life I would be a ballerina solely for the attire. Pastel colored tulle has always been beautiful to me, especially when an embellished corset is in the mix. For Spring 2020 designers seem to be inspired by this enchanting dance and feature tulle creations of their own.

I’m sure that by now you’ve seen the Rodarte Spring 2020 collection circulating the internet (if not go look now, it’s a dream). The look book consisted of dreamy photos that starred celebrities such as Lili Reinhart, Gabrielle Union, Kirsten Dunst, Alexa Demie, and Yalitza Aparicio and featured clothing that seems to be out of fairytale. Pearls adorned everything from the long line gloves to the celebrities hair, BUT let’s talk about the heavenly tulle dresses. The first look in the collection is a mermaid tail of blue, black and white tulle with a white one shoulder bodice. The next tulle delight is a pastel blue dress with a deconstructed tutu with a blue sequin body-con dress underneath, decorated with a tulle neckline and sleeves. Another one shoulder dress was in a creamsicle color that had tulle jutting out below the hips. A bride-like gown was included in the collection, it had short feathers and a cape-like tulle was included. Another white dress was featured, this one included metallic silver polka dots all along the middle of the dress, pearls on the straps and along the square neckline, and tulle on the sides of the polka dot pattern that’s in the center. Then there was a pastel green, yellow, and blue dress that reminds me of the The Princess and Frog. The yellow tulle was underneath the satin green and blue back panels. A strapless a-line light purple dress with yellow, pink, and purple flowers has green, purple, and yellow tulle coming from the back to the sides to create a bustle silhouette. And finally, an all green tulle dress adorned with pearls finishes the look book. All the looks were completed with tulle gloves with pearl embellishments. Rodarte wasn’t the only designer to use tulle for Spring 2020.

Zac Posen’s collection was inspired by his costume design work that he did with the New York City Ballet this Fall. He had green tiered tulle capes, a pink tiered tulle skirt set reminiscent of tutu’s, and a long tiered tulle purple dress that engulfed model Winnie Harlow. Posen’s approach definitely varies from Rodarte’s sophisticated gowns, but his oversized tulle will definitely turn heads.

It’s only the beginning of fashion week, but I’m sure there will be other designers that include tulle in their collections. It makes me excited, I could walk around the city dressed like a ballerina and no one will think I’m crazy— well maybe they might, but at least the Mulleavy sisters and Zac Posen will get it.
